Critter Cam 2012 No. 17 - A Familiar Silhouette...

Di and I were at Creswick, north of Ballarat, today. It was nice to see a pair of Wedgetailed Eagles here on the mainland...

Critter Cam 2012 No. 16 - Wendouree Cocky...

First post from Ballarat...

There was a small flock of these Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos at Lake Wendouree this morning. This one was a bit of a show-off!

Critter Cam 2012 No. 14 - Tucson Woodpecker...

I have a few critter-cam photos to add from my trip to Tucson. However with the internet problems that I am currently suffering from, it might take me a bit of time to get them loaded.

Here is the first one...

A pair of Gila Woodpeckers in a palm tree at the Hotel Tucson City Centre (Inn Suites). The male has the red patch on his head...

Critter Cam 2012 No. 13 - Mad March Flies...

It's not fair! The March Flies are out and about and it's not even February yet!

They are quite large and they bite. You know they are around when you hear the tell-tale low drone, and then when it stops, they have landed, and may be about to BITE!

Critter Cam 2012 No. 11 - Don't step on the cracks!

Although this little one has wasp/bee colouration, I think that it's actually some kind of a fly in disguise...

Critter Cam 2012 No. 10 - Spider-Hunting Bug...

Here's a potential twist. I watched this bug for about ten minutes. He/she kept wandering into areas where there were spider web tripwires. But he/she didn't appear to be at all concerned. As I watched, the bug appeared to be "testing" the web. Maybe spiders are on its menu!

You can see in the second (front left leg) and third photo (front right leg) where the bug is "testing" the web, maybe trying to tempt the web owner out of hiding. The third photo is a different web too.

All supposition of course, as I didn't see any spiders appear. Or maybe they are too smart!

Note: It appears that this is indeed an Assasin Bug. I hadn't seen them go after spiders but apparently they do.

[Oh, and I love the shadow in photo two]

Critter Cam 2012 No. 9 - Kookaburra Sitting in the Old Gum Tree...

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree...
Merry, merry king of the bush is he...
Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra!
Gay your life must be...

(Funny how that nursery rhyme has different connotations these days)

There were four laughing Kookaburras in the trees at the back of us today. Noisy but nice...

I have a new macro lens and I'm loving it!

Here's one of a number of shots I took down the back today. Photo is uncropped.

Critter Cam 2012 No. 7 - Flying Dragon...

I love dragonflies, or flying dragons as our kids used to call them. There were lots around this afternoon but they are hard to photograph. This one obliged...

Critter Cam 2012 No. 6 - Big A$$ Fly

Don't know what species this fly is. But it's big, blue and beautiful...

He/she is over 16mm head and body.

Critter Cam 2012 No. 5 - Which Came First?

Which came first? The chicken or the egg? All will be revealed!

Critter Cam 2012 No. 4 - Ouch, he bit me!

Well, not really. This little Plague Soldier Beetle (Chauliognathus lugubris?) is about 21mm long. That's three times the length of the new smallest vertebrate animal recently found.

Funnily enough, these beetles are omnivores so he might have had a bite if he was a bit bigger, or my thumb was a bit smaller...

Critter Cam 2012 No. 2 - I'm Invisible!

A little less dramatic than the previous post. Another one of our wild neighbours is doing it's level best to stay out of sight.

Peek-a-boo!

Critter Cam 2012 No. 1 - Had a Devil of a Time!

Bit weary this morning. 1.30am last night and our chickens were making one hell of a racket. Grabbed torch. Went down the back to the chicken coop. All three chooks very agitated. The reason? A Tasmanian Devil had broken through the wire and got inside.

Now this was good news and bad news. Good news that the chooks didn't get eaten! Good news that we have devils here. Good news that this one didn't appear to be suffering from the facial tumour disease that has decimated the population. Bad news of course for our chooks, although they appear to be none the worse this morning after a night on the loose, apart from having lost a few feathers.

Tasmanian Devil inside our chook house...
